Scripture Readings March 14, 2010
Jos 5:9a,10-12, 2 Cor 5:17-21, Lk 15:1-3,11-32
Having arrived in the promised land, the Hebrews celebrated their deliverance from affliction and distress (Ps) in the Passover (1). Christ, our Passover, has entrusted to us the message of reconciliation (2): let us forgive one another and celebrate the unconditional and abundant love of God our Father.
For reflection: What makes it difficult for you not to judge certain people harshly?
From the Pastor’s Desk
This Sunday, we share in our Annual Spaghetti Dinner. I want to thank all who are preparing this meal, serving it, attending to the set up and cleaning up. I also want to thank all who are helping to sponsor the meal and for all who are patronizing this event.
It is food that feeds the body and a wonderful spirit that feeds our soul.
I hope that your Lenten season continues to find blessing as you seek to grow more fully as disciples of the Lord Jesus.

Christian Formation and Evangelization
DO YOU KNOW what the Scrutinies are? The Scrutinies occur on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent and are basically rites of self-searching and repentance.
The scrutinies have above all else a spiritual purpose meant to uncover and to heal our weakness and sin and to bring out and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good.
Three scrutinies are celebrated at the 10:30 AM Mass when the Elect (our catechumens (10) and candidates (11) are instructed about the mystery of sin and are filled with Spirit of Christ the Redeemer who is the living water, the light of the world and the resurrection and the life. Please keep our Elect in your prayers.

BAOBAB BLAST: God’s Great Get-Together
What is a Baobab? A baobab is a gigantic tree found in Africa that creates its own ecosystem, and is one of the world’s oldest life forms. A baobab tree’s hollowed-out trunk, leaves, foliage, nectar, fruit, and bark provide basic life needs for many different creatures. The baobab tree serves as a meeting place for many people to gather, discuss, and share stories. BAOBAB BLAST VBS 2010 is an open invitation to be a part of God’s Great Get-Together. Set under the impressive baobab tree, kids will have the opportunity to hear God’s Word, be amazed at God’s wildlife creations, and be a part of a supportive community. This will be a life-changing experience for all kids (ages 3 through grade 4) when they gather together as a community and grow in faith.
During VBS 2010, kids will explore connections with God, family, friends, and others around the world. All the fun will begin Monday, June 21 and run through Friday, June 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Check the church bulletin for registration information and plan to have your child “sit under the impressive baobab tree!” Many adult volunteers are needed to assist us in planning, leading, and supporting this awesome adventure for our parish children. Please consider helping us. To volunteer, telephone Sister Cecilia at 410-833-8515 or e-mail Jeff at jment@shgparish.org.

Thank You: The Franciscan Center
We were delighted to receive your December, 2009 donation of Christmas gifts. As you are well aware, the mission of the Franciscan Center is to provide services and programs for the poor that will assist in their efforts to live a life that is in keeping with their dignity as people of God.
I trust you realize the important role that you play in assisting us to meet the needs of men, women and children who come to us for assistance. May you be rewarded for your goodness and generosity.
St. Vincent de Paul
As one of our Lenten activities, St. Vincent de Paul will again sponsor Easter Giving Trees for collection of specific nutritious, non-perishable foods and Food Lion gift cards for our sister-parish in Appalachia. Because of poverty and unemployment, many people seek help from the St. Therese Neighborhood Aid Program. Whereas food pantries in our area have access to the Maryland Food Bank, are recipients of food drives by churches, scouts and businesses, and receive generous support from local grocery stores. St Therese is without such resources, and they really need our help. Food Lion gift cards enable the volunteers who run Neighbors Aid to restock the shelves with essential items when donated food runs out.
Please take one or more eggs from the tree, purchase, and return the items placing them in designated boxes in the Gathering Area or outside the side entrance to the church near the Music Room.
Food Lion Gift Cards: Sacred Heart School’s Scrip Program will have gift cards available after weekend Masses in Room 105. All you need to do is fill out an order form for “SVDP” Food Lion in the amount of your donation, and your donation will be collected and given to St. Therese. Gift cards not purchased through the Scrip Program may be placed in an envelope marked “SVDP” and handed in with the offertory collection.
Items for St. Therese will be collected: March 6-7, March 13-14, and March 20-21.
