Scripture Readings August 1, 2010

Ecc 1:2;2:21-23, Col 3:1-5,9-11, Lk 12:13-21

Listen carefully to the voice of the Lord (Ps): set your heart on what will last forever (2). We only fool ourselves (1) if we believe that our possessions will bring us happiness and life. Instead, “grow rich in the sight of the Lord” (3).

For reflection: What do you treasure?

From the Pastor’s Desk

The Vocation Office has assigned a seminarian to Sacred Heart for his Pastoral Year!

Stephen Cotter is a seminarian for our Archdiocese as well as for the Military Services.

Stephen will serve as a parish priest in Baltimore for three years after his ordination, and then he will go into a full time chaplaincy in the Armed Services.

Stephen is currently completing a program for Chaplain Training for the military, and will be coming to Sacred Heart in September.

Bishop-elect Richard Spencer

We are very pleased to have Bishop-elect Richard Spencer returning to Sacred Heart to celebrate Mass on Sunday, August 15, at 12 noon.

Sacred Heart was the first assignment for “Fr. Rick” from 1988-1991. Following his assignment at Sacred Heart, he went on to serve the Archdiocese as the Director of the Fr. O’Dwyer Retreat House in Sparks, and then as pastor of St. Peter’s in Oakland. After Oakland, Fr. Spencer returned to active duty as an Army Chaplain.

We look forward to welcoming him back at Sacred Heart. Following the 12 noon Mass on August 15, there will be reception in the Mother Seton Room.

His ordination as bishop is scheduled for September 8, 2010 in Washington, D.C. We are presently making arrangements to charter a bus if enough parishioners express an interest in attending. We invite you to call the Parish Office (410-833-1696) to let us know if you would like to go.

Christian Formation and Evangelization

DO YOU KNOW what RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is?

Although the full process of becoming a Catholic is referred to as a rite, it involves more than liturgical ceremonies. A number of elements form the whole process.

Key among these elements are evangelization, engagement with the community, catechesis, formation for mission and the sacraments of initiation.

Monsignor Aiken

We remember Monsignor’s Fortieth Anniversary as a priest and we will offer our prayers for him in gratitude for his service not only to the Church but to Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart Families whose last names begin with “G” will pray especially for Monsignor Aiken this week.

Prayer for Monsignor Aiken

Good and gracious God, hear our prayers for Monsignor Aiken, your Priest and our Pastor, Your Servant and our Shepherd.

Bless him for his years of service in the priesthood and for his loving example of self-sacrifice and service.

May his selfless ministry in Christ continue to be inspiring, fruitful, worthy and pleasing to You, O Lord.

We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Adult Confirmation

Confirmation is a requirement to be a godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation. If you are over 18 and have never been confirmed, please contact Sister Jude (410-833-1696; srjude@shgparish.org) for more information.

The next adult confirmation is October 24, 2010 at 2 pm in the Basilica of the National Shrine.

MagnifiKids!

Every week our children use the MagnifiKids! Mass books to help them to pray with us as a community. Help is needed to finance our subscription for next year. We would need about $800 for a year round subscription of 80 books.

If you or your organization would be able to assist us in ordering these books, please contact Sister Jude (410-833-1696; srjude@shgparish.org) as soon as possible. Thank you!

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Are you interested in the Catholic Faith?

Sacred Heart will soon begin a new journey in faith to share the richness of the Catholic Church and our parish family. We invite you to learn what the Church teaches. These sessions are also opportunities for you and others whom you may wish to invite, to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church.

These gatherings are for inquirers and are open to people who are unbaptized, as well as those who are baptized Christians from Protestant or Evangelical backgrounds.

Join us on Monday, August 2, at 7 PM in the Mother Seton Room. If you, or someone you know, are interested or would like more information, please call Sister Jude (410-833-1696; srjude@shgparish.org).

Message to Parents

Parents, if your daughter could say YES to the Consecrated Life, could you support her vocation?

What is the Religious or Consecrated Life?

Women who join religious communities are usually called sisters. Men who join religious communities are called brothers, unless they have been ordained to the priesthood.

Some priests are members of religious communities, others are diocesan priests who live and work within their local diocese.

2010-2011 Elementary Religious Education Classes

Children in pre-school through grade 8 who do not attend Sacred Heart School should be registered in our Religious Education program. Classes run from September until early May each year. Two years of preparation are required for receiving the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist; these two sacraments usually take place in second grade. In order to sufficiently know their Faith, children should complete eight years in a Religious Education program before moving into the high-school Confirmation program.

Program information and registration forms are in the Kiosk, the parish office, and at the Religious Education web site (www.shgparish.org/images/rel-ed.htm). Please complete and return the registration forms to the Religious Education Office (in the Parish Center).
