Scripture Readings August 8, 2010

Wis 18:6-9, Heb 11:1-2,8-19, or 11:1-2,8-12

Lk 12:32-48 or 12:35-40

The author of Wisdom speaks of “that night” of exodus from bondage in Egypt (1) when the Lord delivered his chosen people from death (Ps). Let us be prepared for the Lord who will come again, perhaps in the midst of night (3). As we walk in darkness, our journey to our heavenly homeland is illuminated by faith (2).

For reflection: What evidence do you point to as a sign of the presence of God in your life, our world?

From the Pastor’s Desk

Fr. Lanoue and I attended a workshop last week at Emmitsburg on the upcoming changes in the liturgy. These changes will occur in Advent of 2011 if the final translation is approved by the Holy See by the Fall of 2010. The reason for this lengthy delay is that it takes publishers about 1 year to complete all of the books needed for Mass. The changes ARE NOT DRAMATIC. There has been a change in some of the wording of our present texts in order to more faithfully translate the original Latin text into English. There will be a year of instruction, education, and planning in our parishto familiarize all with the revised texts. The earliest that this will begin is Advent of 2010.

Bishop-elect Richard Spencer

We are very pleased to have Bishop-elect Richard Spencer returning to Sacred Heart to celebrate Mass on Sunday, August 15, at 12 noon.

Sacred Heart was the first assignment for “Fr. Rick” from 1988-1991. Following his assignment at Sacred Heart, he went on to serve the Archdiocese as the Director of the Fr. O’Dwyer Retreat House in Sparks, and then as pastor of St. Peter’s in Oakland. After Oakland, Fr. Spencer returned to active duty as an Army Chaplain.

We look forward to welcoming him back at Sacred Heart. Following the 12 noon Mass on August 15, there will be a reception in the Mother Seton Room.

His ordination as bishop is scheduled for September 8, 2010 in Washington, D.C. We are presently making arrangements to charter a bus if enough parishioners express an interest in attending. It would be a Rohrbaugh Coach and we would need a count by Sunday, August 8, in order to be sure a bus is available. For further information call Charlie (Tom) Thomas at 410-833-0628.

Christian Formation and Evangelization

DO YOU KNOW what RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is? It is the Church’s ritual process for calling adults to a conversion of mind and heart and preparing them for a full and active life in the Church.

Unbaptized inquirers who are formally accepted into the initiation process are called catechumens. Baptized Christians from Protestant or Evangelical backgrounds who are formally accepted are called candidates for Full Communion in the Catholic Church.

Adult Confirmation

Confirmation is a requirement to be a godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation. If you are over 18 and have never been confirmed, please contact Sister Jude (410-833-1696; srjude@shgparish.org) for more information. The next adult confirmation is October 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Basilica of the National Shrine.

Monsignor Aiken

We remember Monsignor’s Fortieth Anniversary as a priest and we will offer our prayers for him in gratitude for his service not only to the Church but to Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart Families whose last names begin with “H” will pray especially for Monsignor Aiken this week.

Prayer for Monsignor Aiken

Good and gracious God, hear our prayers for Monsignor Aiken, your Priest and our Pastor, Your Servant and our Shepherd.

Bless him for his years of service in the priesthood and for his loving example of self-sacrifice and service.

May his selfless ministry in Christ continue to be inspiring, fruitful, worthy and pleasing to You, O Lord.

We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

MagnifiKids!

Every week our children use the MagnifiKids! Mass books to help them to pray with us as a Community. Help is needed to finance our subscription for next year. We would need about $800 for a year round subscription of 80 books.

If you or your organization would be able to assist us in ordering these books, please contact Sister Jude (410-833-1696; srjude@shgparish.org) as soon as possible. Thank you!

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Are you interested in the Catholic Faith?

Sacred Heart will soon begin a new journey in faith to share the richness of the Catholic Church and our parish family. We invite you to learn what the Church teaches. These sessions are also opportunities for you and others whom you may wish to invite, to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church.

These gatherings are for inquirers and are open to people who are unbaptized, as well as those who are baptized Christians from Protestant or Evangelical backgrounds.

Join us on Monday, August 2, at 7:00 PM in the Mother Seton Room. If you, or someone you know, are interested or would like more information, please call Sister Jude (410-833-1696; srjude@shgparish.org).

Message to Parents

Parents, remind your children that they are loved by God and have been given gifts to serve others.

Encourage them to consider priesthood and the consecrated life as well as marriage.

What is the Religious or Consecrated Life?

All religious (sisters, brothers and priests) dedicate their lives to serve God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Prayer, community and service are important aspects of their life.

Parish Vocation Cross

Each Sunday, couples or individuals may sign up to receive the Vocation Cross for a week. They commit themselves to pray the vocation prayer during the week in the name of our parish in thanksgiving for all those generously sharing in church ministry and, in particular, for the gift of sisters, brothers, priests and deacons.

All of you are invited to participate in this program. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of the church. We encourage you to sign up for one of the weeks and then to list the Mass you will pick up the Vocation Cross.

It is our hope that this experience will encourage each of us to take seriously our vocation as a member of the Body of Christ and encourage ALL.

Introducing SOURCE!

Introducing SOURCE! We are really excited about our new youth ministry program for this year … Source and Summit … you may have seen the fliers in the bulletin! What is it about…Well, simply put, we are centering our youth ministry activities - Source Middle, Source High (including high school religious education) and Source Confirmation - around the Eucharist and the Liturgy! Our 5:00 PM Liturgy will become the center of our focus with a Summit Band, homilies which our youth and young adults can relate to and Source Middle, High and Confirmation programs will all be built around the Liturgy!

“The Eucharist is the summit of Christian initiation and all apostolic activity, because the Sacrament presupposes membership in the communion of the Church. At the same time, it is the source, because the Sacrament is nourishment for her life and mission.”

2010-2011 Elementary Religious Education Classes

Children in pre-school through grade 8 who do not attend Sacred Heart School should be registered in our Religious Education program. Classes run from September until early May each year. Two years of preparation are required for receiving the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist; these two sacraments usually take place in second grade. There is a special class for children in grades 3 through 8 who have not received Baptism, Reconciliation, and/or Eucharist; we offer the class in English and Spanish on Monday evening between 7:00 and 8:15 PM.

Program information and registration forms are in the Kiosk, the parish office, and at the Religious Education web site (www.shgparish.org/images/rel-ed.htm). Please complete and return the registration forms to the Religious Education Office (in the Parish Center).

Volunteer Catechists Needed for 2010-2011

Do you enjoy working with children? Do you feel called to share your faith with our youngest generation of Christians? If so, then the Religious Education program needs you! The ministry of teaching Catholic beliefs and traditions to the children of our parish is extremely important, and it is done entirely by adult and high school volunteers who have received Confirmation. You don't have to be a brilliant theologian or a professional teacher; we seek only good role models who have a love for the Lord and His children.

If you might be interested in helping with our children’s Religious Education program, please contact Sister Karen at 410-833-8515 or e-mail Jeff at jment@shgparish.org.
